After missing his appointment a year ago due to the pandemic, he returned one of the most anticipated sailing events of each season organized by the Real Club Marítimo del Abra-Real Sporting Club. The Regatta del Gallo, the annual sailing festival, once again produced the most spectacular and most photographed image. It was on a sunny Saturday, with a southeast wind of 8 knots, and an incredible departure in which 70 boats passed under the Suspension Bridge to the delight of the crews themselves and the large public stationed at noon on the shores of Portugalete, Santurtzi and Las Arenas. Once again, that image was generated that is symbolic of the sport of Biscay and of sailing in particular.
After the 8-mile journey through the Abra, the ‘Akelarre’ by Mauricio Guibert was imposed in the Regatta class, the ‘Kribi’ by Juan Manuel Pereiro in Cruise I, the ‘Kosamui’ by Rainer Miller in Cruise II and the ‘Kiwi ‘by Igor Gil among the J80.
The Biscayan waters of Abra once again hosted, after the parenthesis of 2020, one of the most special and participatory regattas in the Cantabrian Sea: a Rooster Regatta that had a magical start. A few days before the start of the winter season, this test was held, which has already become one of the benchmarks of Biscayan sport during this time. The wonderful picture discovered by the platoon of 70 cruise ships sailing under the Suspension Bridge, with their colored sails unfurled in the wind, was the beautiful snapshot taken by hundreds of fans and walkers who stood on both banks of the Estuary to watch the start from the Dock of the Benedicta. The weather accompanied like never before and the boats headed towards the waters of the Abra, where they completed an 8-mile journey to enjoy and decide on the last winners of the year 2021 in this event organized by the Real Club Marítimo del Abra-Real Sporting Club . This test is always one of the most anticipated by all sailors -about 500-, which make this Regatta del Gallo the busiest event of each sailing season together with the Regatta a la Inversa.
Almost the entire Biscayan fleet was present this Saturday in a regatta whose culmination took place later at the Real Club Marítimo del Abra-Real Sporting Club, with all the security protocols and limited capacity, in an awards ceremony different from previous years. In addition, the Commodore of the Club de Las Arenas, Tomás Alonso-Allende, discovered who won the Gallo Award, to the most outstanding crew or sailor of the year 2021: to the entire team of the José Luis de Ugarte Sailing School, for the work, effort and dedication, to achieve the results of the last years; and the Pata Award, who was chosen for committing the decision that has caused the most talk in this sailing sport during the competitions of another season that is now ending: Borja Gómez’s ‘Kunana’, for having a bad leg. Tomás Alonso-Allende himself received a final surprise when he received the awards he delivers, the rooster and the leg, on the occasion of his dismissal from office after twelve years. It was a day of many emotions, also with the farewell of President Ramón Zubiaga, who had nice words towards the recently deceased Jorge Churruca and towards his father Ramón, also a former president, with whom he melted into an emotional hug.
