WiFi in Spain will be faster and more stable with the 6 GHz band: what has been approved and what improvements will we see in 2022

Until the government releases a band for certain uses, many technologies are limited. This is the case of WiFi 6E, a direct evolution of the already widespread WiFi 6. Fortunately for users, from now on it will be possible to get a Faster, more stable WiFi with less interference, thanks to the possibility of using the 6 GHz band for the transmission of information.

Unlike on other occasions, where Spain has arrived late to the date set by Europe, this time has already been officially published in the BOE the implementation of the use of the 6 GHz band, which will allow the use of the WiFi 6E through those devices certified with this new generation of WiFi.

The WiFi 6E can already be used in Spain (if you have a compatible device)

The Government had until the end of 2021 to regulate the use of the 6 GHz band, which allows taking advantage of the WiFi 6E technology, also known directly as 6 GHz WiFi or IEEE 802.11ax-2021. We are not facing WiFi 7 since the jump is not so great, but it is an evolution with clear advantages in terms of speed and stability, thanks to the use of wider channels and a new less congested band.

This 6 GHz band will join the more common 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands for WiFi. Specifically and according to It is defined by the BOE of December 24, 2021, a total of 480 MHz will be free for the users’ disposal.

In accordance with Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2021/1067, on the harmonized use of the band 5945-6425 MHz for wireless access systems, including local area networks (WAS / RLAN), these applications are allowed in the aforementioned frequency band under the consideration of common use in accordance with the technical conditions indicated in the annex to the aforementioned Decision.

Low power devices for indoor use (LPI) will have a maximum power of 23 dBm (eirp), with a maximum average eirp power density of 10 dBm / MHz for in-band emissions and -22 dBm / MHz for out-of-band emissions. Very low power devices for indoor and outdoor use (VLP) will have a maximum power of 14 dBm (eirp), with a maximum average eirp power density of 1 dBm / MHz for in-band emissions, or up to 10 dBm / MHz if they operate with channelization that does not exceed 20 MHz, and -45 dBm / MHz for out-of-band emissions.

The 6 GHz band will therefore cover from 5,945 to 6,425 MHz. This spectrum can be divided into a total of 24 channels of 20 MHz, 12 channels of 40 MHz, 6 channels of 80 MHz or 3 channels of 160 MHz, being the first time that such wide channels are used for WiFi.

Each country regulates its spectrum as best interests it. In the case of the USA, this 6 GHz band reaches 7,125 MHz. Germany was the first European country to approve the use of 6 GHz for WiFi, at the end of 2020.

In Spain it does not cover that much, but these additional 480 MHz will be enough to be able to access a less congested network, which will lead directly to a faster and more stable WiFi. In order to take advantage of the 6 GHz band we will need a router and devices compatible with WiFi 6E, which is expected to become popular in 2022.
