New blow to press freedom in Hong Kong




The rise of authoritarianism in Hong Kong advances unstoppable. Press freedom in the territory has suffered a new blow this morning with the arrest of six people linked to Stand News, a very popular pro-democracy digital publication.

Among those arrested are the current director of the outlet and his predecessor, as well as pop star Denise Ho and MP Margaret Ng, both members of the board of directors. 200 police officers have registered the wording, according to a colonial-era law that punishes the «conspiracy to print or distribute seditious materials.

Not the first attack against a means of communication. The Apple Daily, the first newspaper in the territory, was forced to close this summer due to government harassment.

Its founder, Jimmy Lai, faces several criminal cases for which he has already accumulated more than 3 years in prison.
