The residents of several neighborhoods in the municipalities affected by the Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption could return home soon. The Volcanic Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands (Pevolca) has reported that this weekend will make gas measurements with the aim that the residents of the area that goes from the area of Tacande to Espigón street; Marina Alta and Marina Baja; part of Las Martelas and the area of The puddle they can return.
This area, evacuated on October 20 due to the advance of the lava flows and the hazard prediction maps, will start the year in their homes, if on Sunday the 2nd the termsare still good and safe to health.
The spokesperson of the Scientific Committee, María José Blanco, who indicated that it will be conditioned to the evolution of the situation.
On behalf of the Steering Committee, Miguel Ángel Morcuende, has indicated that the danger due to the existence of gases remains and insisted that, when the evacuated areas can be accessed, people have to be always accompanied and ventilate homes, while emphasizing that it is not necessary to enter underground areas such as semi-buried warehouses or garages.
Likewise, he said, they remain different hazards associated with volcanic activity-gases, eruptive centers and flows, spikes in seismicity or accumulation of pyroclasts.
At this time, all the residents are still evacuated except for the Las Martelas neighborhood, which will be joined by these five nearby neighborhoods in the coming days. In the hotels enabled to alleviate the housing emergency there are 562 people, of which 372 are housed in Fuencaliente, 120 in Breña Baja and 70 in Los Llanos de Aridane, managed by the Red Cross and municipal services.
The trails reopen
The meeting also agreed to reopen some trails on the island, access to which had been closed after the eruption, as there is no current risk to people. These trails are outside the excluded and evacuated zone.
