Mercedes-Benz wants to bet on autonomy to differentiate itself from its competition. The German manufacturer presented the Vision EQXX this Monday at CES 2022. It is a highly efficient prototype electric car that, according to the company, you can travel 1,000 kilometers on a single charge.
The company ensures that the Vision EQXX will be able to achieve that exceptional range thanks to consumption of less than 10 kilowatt hours (kWh) per 100 kilometers. According to press release from Mercedes-Benz, this consumption is equivalent to using a dryer or an air conditioning unit for three hours.
Vision EQXX, a basis for future production cars
Rather than increasing the size of the batteries for more range, the development team created a completely new package. The new batteries have a density close to 400 Wh / L, are much lighter and make better use of the available space on the platform.
The Vision EQXX will also be assisted by 117 roof-mounted photocells. According to Mercedes, these characteristics could add up to 25km range on long-distance trips, although, yes, in ideal conditions.
The 1,750 kg gross weight of the car and its aerodynamic lines (it has a drag coefficient of only 0.17) they also play in favor of reaching 1,000 kilometers of autonomy. In this way, the Vision EQXX is above market cars such as the Lucid Air (837 kilometers) and the Tesla Model S Long Range Plus (647 kilometers).
It should be noted that the autonomy declared by Mercedes-Benz is the product of a computer simulation “in real life traffic conditions”. The automaker has yet to prototype the car in a real-world scenario, however that will happen soon. The Vision EQXX will roll on roads with different characteristics this summer.
On the other hand, the design of the Vision EQXX does not go unnoticed. The exterior lines as well as the interior ones speak of the future. On the outside, the silver of the ultra-high-strength steel stands out and on the inside, a huge 47.5 inch screen that spans the entire width of the vehicle’s dashboard.
Specific, the Vision EQXX as such will not become a car that we will see on the streets, but it is a guide that serves to understand how Mercedes-Benz imagines the future. The company says that many of the technologies applied to this vehicle will be turned into production cars in the next two to three years.
The truth is that Mercedes-Benz does not want to be left behind in the race for the electric car. Last year it announced its plans to invest more than 40 billion euros until 2030 to boost the development and manufacture of new electric cars and batteries.
