The wholesale price of electricity rises 10% this Monday, to 150.5 euros / MWh

The price of electricity in the wholesale market (pool) has been set for this Monday, January 3, at 150.5 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), which means exceeding the value set for this Sunday by 10%, despite the fact that it remains below the barrier of 200 euros / MWh.

According to data from the Iberian Electricity Market Operator (OMIE), the maximum price will be recorded between 8:00 and 9:00, when it will be 189.26 euros / MWh, while the minimum will be 100.36 euros / MWh between 23:00 and 00:00.

With this rise, the second that chains the wholesale market, the price of electricity triples the amount registered just a year agoor, when it was paid at 46.93 euros / MWh.

But nevertheless, the price will not exceed the barrier of 200 euros / MWh for the fourth consecutive day, a value that was reached in almost 70% of the days of October, in 45% of the days of November and in 80% of the days of December.

In the first three days of January, the average price of electricity stood at 136.7 euros / MWh, 43% less than the average registered during the month of December (239.17 euros / MWh), the most expensive of history to date.

In this sense, the light closed 2021 as the most expensive year in the historical series, with an average price of 111.4 euros / MWh, more than triple than last year, the cheapest in the last 17 years thanks to the fall in demand and prices caused by the pandemic.
